Cognizant sets up Montessori education for under privileged

Ramacharan Charitable Trust, Chennai (SRCT) was established in 1999 by a group of like-minded people, to enable under-privileged children receive quality education at primary school level through Montessori method of teaching. Since 2004, SRCT has been working with kindergarten children of Corporation schools to create a lasting impact on their learning and behavior. Through the Montessori method, SRCT provides quality intervention during the most crucial period of intellectual and emotional development to these children and develops and sustains the child’s inherent interest in learning. The Montessori method has been found to kindle a lifelong interest in learning, boost self-esteem, self-confidence, thinking ability and shape the individual holistically.

Evaluation of SRCT’s intervention in the Chennai Corporation schools showed positive impact and visible improvement in keenness to learn, hygiene and interpersonal skills. As a result the Corporation of Chennai introduced the Montessori method of education in all their primary classes in 30 out of 40 primary schools in Chennai and selected SRCT to implement this programme through their trained Montessori teachers.

Cognizant Foundation has partnered with the Chennai Corporation and SRCT for implementing the Montessori method in six Chennai Corporation schools.  The Foundation has provided the funding required for the purchase of Montessori material and operating expenses of the project. This support benefits over 500 under-privileged students pursuing education at 6 Chennai Corporation Schools, every year.
